Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said the team will be major players in free agency this offseason.

The Dallas Cowboys had an incredible 2014 season that ended in disappointment, thanks in part because of a controversial call in their playoff game against the Green Bay Packers.

Very few, if any, people gave the Cowboys a chance to contend before the seasons. Their defense was viewed as a weakness but out performed a lot of people’s expectations. That isn’t to say that their defense can’t improve, there is a lot of room for improvement and Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones specifically talked about adding a pass rusher.

From Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News:

"But he said adding another pass rusher is among his top priorities.Do the Cowboys have the capability to be major players in free agency? “Yes,” he said. “Yes we are.”"

Of course the Cowboys could try to add a pass rusher during the NFL draft instead of free agency, which could potentially be a cheaper avenue. That doesn’t mean that Jones will avoid free agency.

“That’s a very good question,” Jones said when asked if he wants to be active in free agency. “I’d love to have the opportunity to improve that pass rush in the range of something that we could afford and make sense logically.”

The key will be whether Jones can show restraint in free agency and make smart decisions instead of throwing big bucks at big names. He showed that he has that ability when he passed on quarterback Johnny Manziel for guard Zack Martin in the first-round of the 2014 NFL draft, and was rewarded with an All-Pro lineman.

Martin was the first Cowboys rookie to be named an All-Pro in over four decades.
