The Washington Redskins have hired Bill Callahan to help fix Robert Griffin III’s protection by serving as the team’s offensive line coach.

After the failures of yet another regime, Jay Gruden has gone ahead and protected himself by hiring a new offensive line coach in Bill Callahan to help turn things around.

ESPN.com’s Ed Werder reports that the deal is a three-year contract of the ‘very lucrative’ variety.

“The Redskins have hired former Cowboys OC and offensive line coach Bill Callahan to very lucrative three-year contract,” Werder reported on Thursday afternoon.

You’d think that this would be a job promotion for Callahan, but he has left Dallas to the the same offensive line job he was doing this past year — only next year he’ll do it in Washington.

Daniel Snyder didn’t stop there either. According to Jason La Canfora, not only is the team hiring Callahan as the new offensive coordinator, but they’re also eyeing San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio to head up their defense.

It’s a steal of a hire for the Redskins in that they literally stole Callahan away from the Dallas Cowboys after a year in wich he finally got the offense to work right. It’s really debatable about how much Callahan had to do with this, since he lost play calling duties which really doesn’t bode well for how well he performs in that department.

Still, a three-year contract to be something other than an offensive coordinator is a bit of a puzzling move. You typically leave teams to become a higher position than what you are at your current job — which is why becoming the offensive coordinator would make more sense for Callahan.

That’s not the case though, but Callahan’s protection knowledge is something the Redskins need, as protecting Robert Griffin III is critical to not only his success but the success of the franchise.

There were tensions between Robert Griffin III and Jay Gruden during the season, but it appears that Callahan is being brought in as almost a peace offering of sorts. He struggled at times in Dallas, but he never lost his job and is heading to Washington after his finest year yet as a coordinator with the Cowboys.
