The NCAA has agreed to restore all the Penn State vacated wins from 1998-2011, making JoePa the winningest coach of all-time again.
The Penn State Nittany Lions will have all of their vacated wins from 1998-2011 restored, the NCAA announced on Friday. With this, late head coach Joe Paterno once again becomes the all-time winningest coach in FBS college football with 409.
Late last week it was reported that there was a potential deal in place that could see the victories restored, the ones that were taken away as part of the sanctions in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex scandal.
Back in 2012, the NCAA dropped some of the most damning sanctions that they ever have against a school following the scandal, which included not only the vacated wins, but a $60 million fine and a very heavy reduction in scholarships. Last year it was announced that the scholarships would be restored, and Penn State was also allowed to return to a bowl game.
A brief statement from the NCAA made the official announcement and also noted that child sex abuse survivors will receive millions as part of the settlement.
"Programs serving child sexual abuse survivors will now receive millions of dollars as part of the NCAA’s proposed settlement with Pennsylvania state officials. This lawsuit stemmed from the NCAA’s sanctions against Penn State University for its role in allowing serial child sexual abuse to occur on its campus. The proposed settlement agreement with the NCAA, university and state officials, among other things, restores Penn State’s vacated wins from 1998 through 2011."
This is a monumental day for Penn State fans who have been outraged since the sanctions were handed down in July of 2012; and for NCAA haters, this is a day that has made them none too pleased, with basically everything being given back to Penn State within the last year.
