UK coach John Calipari opines for fans to give All-Star votes to former player DeMarcus Cousins.

You gotta love John Calipari.

With how he reacts with his players, especially those that have gone on to the NBA, it’s easy to define him as a players coach. A great example of that has been shown in one of the coach’s latest tweets, in which Calipari pushes for fans of the University-plus to vote for Sacramento Kings star center and former UK player DeMarcus Cousins in hopes to make him a starter in the All-Star game.

There aren’t many coaches who’ll do this for a player, let alone rock the attire that Calipari has on in the attached photograph. And the lingo? “The things I do for my sons.” You gotta love Calipari’s attempt to be “hip,” even if it comes off as a bit awkward.

While you could argue that Cousins is very deserving of a starting spot in the upcoming All-Star game, it’d take six votes from every student at the University of Kentucky to get the big man into the top 3.

After the latest 2015 NBA All-Star voting returns, the top-3 starting front court players in the Western Conference would be New Orleans’ Anthony Davis (922,381 votes), Los Angeles’ Blake Griffin (490,786 votes) and Memphis’ Marc Gasol (476-660 votes).

A couple spots down in the 8th spot is Cousins, with 209,742 votes. Considering Cousins has been, arguably, the best center in the NBA this season (averaging a career-high 24.2 points, 12.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.7 blocks), being 8th in votes is a bit of a surprise; he’s currently behind the likes of Dwight Howard, Tim Duncan, Kevin Durant, and LaMarcus Aldridge.

If one had to guess why Cousins’ votes aren’t higher up, I’d blame him being in Sacramento. Die hard fans are well aware of how dope a player Cousins is, but it’s unclear if his name has become familiar to the casual fans in the way a Stephen Curry, Anthony Davis or Damian Lillard has over the last few years.

If Cousins fails to be named a starter, he’ll surely be named a reserve in the Western Conference, which isn’t a bad thing, but for the sake of Calipari and the UK population, maybe they can deliver a fourth-quarter rush to sneak the big guy into the starting lineup.
