Bears’ Willie Young will try his best to recruit big name free agent DT Ndamukong Suh.

When we think about the Chicago Bears defense, we think of a mean and monstrous unit that will punish you every chance they get. They are also usually known for being one of the best defensive units in the NFL. As of late, though, they have been a shell of their former selves.

I don’t think there was any team afraid of the Bears defense this past season. It even got to the point where opposing running backs were probably salivating when they knew they had the Chicago Bears coming up. That’s not the Bears defense we’ve come to know and, well, hate over the years.

The Bears are coming off a season where they gave up a total of 6,033 yards of offense to opposing teams and the only team that had more points against were the Oakland Raiders.

That’s just….wow. That’s not the Chicago Bears.

One aspect of the Bears defense that has always been a staple over the years that they were dominant on defense was the pass rush. That aspect has been seriously lacking over the last few years. In 2014, the Bears were tied for 16th in the league in sacks with the Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans with 39. In 2013, they were tied for dead last with the Jacksonville Jaguars with just 31 sacks.

The improvement in the pass rush is credited to the additions of defensive ends Jared Allen and Willi young last offseason. The Bears may be looking to add another piece to that defensive line this offseason as well.

Pro-Bowl defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh could be on his way out of the Detroit Lions this offseason, making him an unrestricted free-agent if he remains without a contract come March 10 when the free-agent market opens. The Chicago Bears could be one of the front-runners to acquiring the star defensive tackle, if, financially, reasons permit them to acquire him.

With stud defensive tackles extremely hard to come by, it’s said that Suh will probably demand the kind of contract similar to J.J. Watt’s six-year, $100 million contract he signed with the Houston Texans last offseason. Not sure if the Bears will be able to afford giving out that kind of contract, but Willi Young, a former teammate of Suh’s in Detroit, will do his best to recruit his former teammate to the Bears.

“I could see myself doing that,” Young said, according to ESPN Chicago’s Mike Wright. “We would like to have him.”

Suh would be the perfect fit in Chicago and he would absolutely be the guy to bring that mean streak back to the Chicago defense. The problem is, they may have too many other areas they need to address with needs, so they’d have to spread out what remaining cap space they have left. Although, trading away Jay Cutler and his massive contract would certainly free up space if they do choose to move on from Cutler.
