The former Cy Young award winner could be heading home to Missouri

The St. Louis Cardinals, one of the most successful franchises in baseball, have a knack for having talent end up in their laps. It appears that former Cy Young award winner and All-Star pitcher Max Scherzer, could be making his way to St. Louis whom are having a great offseason after picking up Jason Heyward from the Atlanta Braves.

The former Detroit Tiger, commands a high price tag and so far no one has stepped up and met his number. The Cardinals, his hometown team could be the ones to make things work financially with Scherzer.

Scherzer wants a contract of $200 million, close to what Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw signed last offseason. However, with big financial demands, teams aren’t too quick to commit to such a deal.

St. Louis who has always had a great string of success with players in their minor league system, could look to free agency to bolster their rotation.

It would be weird to see the Cardinals offer the price tag that Scherzer commands when the most the franchise has ever paid a pitcher was $97.5 million to ace Adam Wainwright. A $200 million contract would be more than double that.

With free agency still dragging on and Scherzer yet to commit to anyone, that price could come down as well. Wherever he signs, he will certainly receive a contract at the least in the $100 million range, especially after Jon Lester got paid big time this offseason by the Chicago Cubs.

Scherzer, in a Cardinals uniform would be a steal for the franchise. The Cardinals are perennially in the World Series picture and are looking to get back in after falling to the Boston Red Sox a couple of years ago. Scherzer would strengthen an already strong ball club.

If a deal is made, it will continue to show why the Cardinals are one of the best run franchises in baseball.
