Rangers on verge of acquiring Yovani Gallardo from Brewers
The Texas Rangers are on the verge of trading for Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo to beef up their starting rotation.
Pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report for spring training next month and it appears the Texas Rangers will have another new name and face to get acquainted with as the club is close to trading for Milwaukee Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo.
Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports the two teams are on the verge of finalizing the deal for the one-time All-Star to add a quality arm behind ace Yu Darvish.
Gallardo turns 29 in February and was an All-Star in 2010 for the Brewers after he went 14-7 with a 3.84 ERA in 31 starts. He is scheduled to be a free agent at the end of the season so the Rangers are hoping he had a big contract year performance to help the Rangers get back to the playoffs after missing the postseason last year.
He only went 8-11 last year after winning 72 over the previous five seasons but he posted a career-best 3.51 ERA in 32 starts. He has pitched at least 180.2 innings over the last six seasons so he is a consistent arm that should give Tarvish some support at the top of the rotation.
Injuries limited Darvish to only 22 starts last year and a 10-7 record. He tied Colby Lewis for the team lead with 10 wins and no other pitcher even had more than five so this team is in dire need of an arm like Gallardo to shore up the rotation.
His peripheral stats are likely to see a dip in production considering he’s switching to the American League from the National League, but this is a prudent move for the front office to show the team and their fans they are committed to upgrading the roster.
No word yet on what the price will be to acquire Gallardo, but some sort of prospects is the likely cost to acquire the one-time All-Star who attended high school in Fort Worth and that could help them sign him to an extension before he hits free agency at season’s end, according to Fox Sports’ Jon Morosi.
For the Brewers their attention could turn toward free agent James Shields to fill Gallardo’s spot in the rotation and get a couple of prospects to shore up the farm system.
