Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman suffered a sprained elbow in the NFC Championship Game but is expected to play in Super Bowl XLIX on Feb. 1.

Richard Sherman played through obvious pain in the Seahawks thrilling comeback victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday but is expected to be healthy enough to play in the Super Bowl in two weeks.

Sherman favored his left arm after injuring his elbow after colliding with teammate Kam Chancellor at the end of a James Starks run that required an MRI on Monday. The 12th man can take a deep breath because the All-Pro cornerback was only diagnosed with a sprained left elbow and won’t miss the Super Bowl, according to NFL Media’s Albert Breer.

After the game, Sherman said his arm would have to fall off for him to miss the Super Bowl, so this news isn’t altogether surprising, but it is reassuring he won’t be too severely limited.

With the extra week off between the championship games and the Super Bowl, Sherman will be afforded some extra rest to ensure he doesn’t suffer any setbacks that could jeopardize his availability for Feb. 1 as the Seahawks go for back-to-back Super Bowl wins.

And the Seahawks are going to need the three-time first team All-Pro against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots to shut down the Pats receivers like he’s done for the better part of the last three years.

Widely considered the NFL’s best cornerback, Sherman’s absence from the game would have been a catastrophic loss for Seattle to overcome against Brady who may have put himself in position to be the best quarterback of all time after advancing to a sixth Super Bowl.

The chess match between Brady and Sherman will be one of many intriguing storylines and matchups to watch during the game and the lead up to the game should be awfully entertaining as well.

Just imagine Sherman at media days and the type of bulletin board material he may provide for the Patriots and you know he’s going to be asked about Darrelle Revis, the Patriots corner who held the title as the game’s best corner before Sherman’s ascension.
