Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant will not participate in Sunday’s Pro Bowl due to a groin injury.

Add All-Pro receiver Dez Bryant to the growing list of players unable or unwilling to participate in the NFL Pro Bowl, per Clarence Hill at the Star-Telegram. The game is set to take place exactly one week before the Super Bowl. The Dallas Cowboys star will instead rest a groin injury suffered while preventing any further injury on the precipice of an offseason in which Bryant will demand one of the richest contracts in the league.

It’s a no-brainer for Bryant and anyone seeking a new contract this offseason to sit out the Pro Bowl. Why risk injuries and the prospect of losing millions of dollars so you can play in a meaningless game? Bryant sure didn’t seem slowed by a groin injury when he was using Sam Shields as a vaulting point, but it’s plenty enough for him to rest up and opt out of this exhibition match.

Bryant won’t be missing much in Arizona though. For one, he’s at the point in his career where he can probably make the Pro Bowl any given season, provided Tony Romo remains under center.

For another, Bryant has averaged over 90 catches, 1,300 yards and 12 touchdowns in his last three seasons. If he can keep that up, and there’s no reason to believe he can’t, Dez should be a Pro Bowl selection every year. With that in mind, he can look forward to playing in the big game next year, when his contract status will likely be more secure.

In the meantime, Bryant really only misses out on hanging with Hall of Fame legends Cris Carter and Michael Irvin, who are captains of the two Pro Bowl teams this year. While he hardly needs pointers at this juncture in his career, one can never learn too much. Working for a week with one of these two could only beneficial for a guy like Dez Bryant.

That said, you have to take care of your home and family first, and until Dez Bryant signs a new contract, he has to keep his priorities in line. Get that big money, via a long-term extension or otherwise, then start thinking about Pro Bowl appearances and other meaningless snaps of football.
