Actor J.K. Simmons will be hosting SNL with musical guest D’Angelo and if for some ridiculous reason you have no idea who Simmons is, let this be your opportunity to get acquainted with one of the greatest, most under-appreciated actors of recent times.
J.K Simmons has been cleaning up this award season with his supporting performance in Whiplash as malevolent jazz teacher Terence Fletcher at the fictional Shaffer Conservatory, the finest music school in the nation. He takes the starry-eyed Andrew Neiman (rising star Miles Teller) under his wing and dishes out plenty of abuse in trying to push Andrew to reach his true potential.
Teller and Simmons in ‘Whiplash’
The film was the surprise of the year receiving rave reviews and scoring three Oscar nominations: Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay for writer/director Damien Chazelle, and Best Supporting Actor for Simmons who is far and away the favorite to win the award.
Though perhaps not the first name thought of when considering some of the more notable and recognizable character actors on television and film, Simmons has made his mark on some popular series such as Law & Order, The Closer, and HBO’s acclaimed prison drama Oz.
He was featured in Oscar nominees Juno, as the titular character’s soft-spoken father, and Up In The Air, as an employee let go by the film’s leading George Clooney. He also played the hilariously clueless CIA supervisor in the Coen Brothers’ Burn After Reading and lent his voice as the iconic Cave Johnson in the video game Portal 2.
But all pale in comparison to perhaps his greatest performance as J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spiderman trilogy. All this talk of unforgivable Oscar snubbing this year and everyone forgets the Academy robbed him three films in a row.

His role was so well received by fans and critics alike, director of The Amazing Spider Man reboots Marc Webb toyed around with perhaps having him reprise the role in the series’ later films. We can only pray.
It is unfortunately not a rarity that such a talented actor would fly under the radar for so long, but it looks like Simmons will be standing on that stage come Oscar night and will finally receive the recognition he has so long deserved.
