Doug Marrone has found a job as an assistant coach in Jacksonville.

It didn’t take too long for Doug Marrone to find a new gig, as the Jacksonville Jaguars have hired the former Buffalo Bills head coach as assistant head coach and offensive line coach.

After interviewing for multiple head coaching jobs, including openings with the New York JetsChicago Bears and Atlanta Falcons, it seemed like landing another head coaching job would not be in the cards at this time. Marrone may have to settle for something less right now, and the Jacksonville Jaguars may be the place to do that.

The Jaguars fired their offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch, so it seemed possible that Marrone could have taken that job. However, the Jaguars were also in need of a new offensive line coach, as George Yarno was out the entire year has he battles with cancer. Marrone will take over Yarno’s position as offensive line coach, as well as be the assistant head coach.

Marrone was strictly an offensive line and tight ends coach during his college days and his early NFL coaching career with the Tennessee Titans and New York Jets. He eventually was promoted to offensive coordinator with the New Orleans Saints in 2006 before returning to his alma-mater Syracuse as their head coach in 2009. He was hired by the Buffalo Bills as their head coach in 2013 and spent two seasons there before opting out of the final year of his contract this year.

Many people thought that when Marrone opted out of his final year in Buffalo that he had another head coaching job lined up, but that obviously was not the case. Not sure why exactly Marrone decided to leave Buffalo, maybe there was a mutual agreement where both parties wanted to move on.

In any event, Marrone is out of Buffalo and headed to Jacksonville to hopefully help a Jaguars offensive line that has been horrible at protecting their young quarterback Blake Bortles.

It may not be a bad move by Marrone to be honest. He can take a step back from the pressure and grueling responsibilities of being a head coach and just focus on trying to improve the Jaguars offensive line and boost his reputation. If he can drastically improve the Jaguars’ offensive line, thus improving the Jaguars’ passing and running game, he could improve his stock of getting another head coaching job possibly next year.

He has the financial flexibility as well, as the Bills will still be paying him the $4 million he’s owed from the last year of his contract, plus whatever he will be getting from the Jaguars this year. However, if he is not able to turn this offensive line around, he may be out of a job again and find it even harder to find a job next year.
