Shanice Clark, a star in NCAA Women’s Basketball circles, was found dead after apparently choking on gum in her dorm room.

There are certain times that life just puts things into perspective for everyone and often times that perspective comes out of tragedy. That’s the case for those who were honored enough to know Shanice Clark, a star basketball player in the NCAA who has been taken away far too soon.

Clark was a star for California University of Pennsylvania, and looked to have a bright future in the WNBA should she choose to go that route with her professional career. All of that has come to an abrupt and tragic end though, as Clark was found dead at the age of 21 after apparently falling asleep and choking to death on gum.

The NCAA confirmed the death of Clark and passed on condolences to all that knew her — a circle that is likely enormous.

Life is so cruel and unfair at times, it’s hard to stomach. There are people who walk away from devastating car accident, survive machine gun fire and fall from great heights only to have suffered minor scrapes.

Yet it’s gum that took a bright and talented 21-year old woman from the world which is so painfully unfair it’s hard to comprehend. Tragedy touches us all differently, but out of this tragedy will come an awareness of just how amazing a person Shanice Clark was.

She was more than just a top basketball player in the country, she was someone’s daughter and friend who had a bright future ahead of her both in and out of basketball. To have that potential robbed is another reminder that life is savagely unfair and for some reason it’s those who seem to only do good that pay the price in the most painful ways.
