Obviously that made the St. Louis Cardinals feel pretty good about themselves. Seeing a commissioner make this type of comment is a bit different, but perhaps this is simply his parting shot at the rest of baseball. There is no question that the Cardinals have one of the nicest stadiums, biggest fan bases, and they have had a lot of success and history.
There are plenty of other great baseball cities out there as well, but Selig does have a bit of an advantage on the majority of people.
Selig has experienced all 30 cities and has taken in multiple games in each city throughout his career. There are a few other ballparks that would come close to matching up with Busch Stadium, especially Wrigley Field and Fenway Park. Both of those organizations have just as much history as the Cardinals, but Selig didnāt make any mention of them.
Perhaps Selig was simply being polite to the city of St. Louis since he was being honored there, or perhaps he was being genuine and truly does prefer St. Louis.
Either way, it is a very interesting comment for fans to hear come out of his mouth. Showing favoritism for a certain city or team isnāt something that most commissioners do, even after the leave the office. That being said, no one can really disagree or hate his comment because of the type of city that St. Louis is.
There is no question that they are one of the best baseball cities in the country, but there are others that are better in different ways. Itās always a fun debate for fans and analysts to have, but seeing a commissioner come out and take a side is certainly something to notice.
All of that being said, we wish Selig the best in his retirement and expect to see him visit St. Louis to take in more Cardinals games in the future after these comments.
