The terrible times for everything surrounding the Toronto Maple Leafs just keeps on piling on.

The Toronto Maple Leafs currently sit with a record of 22-22-3. They have 47 points at the All-Star break which firmly plants them in the 10th spot in the Eastern Conference.

Very disappointing considering their aspirations to content this season.

Last night they skated against the last place Carolina Hurricanes, and dropped the game with little to no effort to show as they lost a dispirited game 4-1 on their home ice. The loss marked the Leafs fifth straight, and 13th out of their last 16 games.

As we all know, Canadians take their hockey seriously, especially those from Toronto.

The fans displeasure was not only heard loud and clear, but seen. Four Maple Leaf fans threw their jerseys onto the ice in disgust.

Three of the four were ticketed for their transgressions and instantly removed from Air Canada Centre.

According to NESN, the charges were not criminal offenses, but each will face a possible $125 fine.

Aside from stupidly dubbing the incident “Jersey-Gate,” the takeaway here is that these fans thew the wrong merchandise onto the ice. In a sport so famously filled for throwing stuff onto the ice, it’s funny to think that these guys will be banned for an entire year.

I mean let’s think about it. The hat-trick sees hats from all over the entire arena pour onto the ice. While you can claim your hat after the game, there’s no guarantee you’re going to get it back. That’s true fandom if I’ve ever seen it.

Remember Detroit in the late 90’s? Octopus was frequently thrown onto the ice. Or how about the Florida Panthers run in 1997? John Vanbiesbrouck and opposing goalies would have to routinely hide in their nets to stay away from the “rat-attack” that came pouring down on them.

The moral of the story here is no hockey fan should ever throw anything onto the ice if the home-team is losing.

Should your team be winning though…let it rain hockey fans.
