NBC using Tumblr to allow fans to live stream TV commercials

NBC announced that viewers will be able to stream Super Bowl ads moments after they air on TV as a part of “Super Stream Sunday,” an event where viewers will be able to stream content on NBC for 11 hours. This includes the pregame show, the Super Bowl itself, the half time show starring Katy Perry, and a post game viewing of the NBC hit show: The Blacklist.

However, this stream will have different advertisements than the live TV version. In response, NBC is launching a Sports Tumblr page where fans can live stream the ads on TV from their desktops or tablets moments after the ads air on NBC.

More information on the “Super Stream Sunday” event on NBC can be found here.

“We recognize that Super Bowl TV ads are must-see content for many viewers, and we’re thrilled to connect our digital audience to the spots in a seamless manner immediately after they air on television,” said Rick Coredella, SVP & GM, Digital Media, in a press release on Wednesday, January 21st, 2015.

Tumblr, a website where users can do anything from write blog posts to post viral cat videos, will be the platform NBC is using to stream these TV ads.

“Tumblr is a visually-rich, social-friendly platform that is perfect to showcase the Super Bowl TV ads. We are optimistic this experience will be the first step in creating a more robust NBC Sports destination on Tumblr,” Cordella went on to say in the Press Release.

Streaming the advertisements on Tumblr will give members who are live streaming the event at home the ability to instantly view the ads.

Fans will then have the ability to re-post the content of their favorite commercials, turn a clip into a GIF, or combine the two with a cat video to make it go viral just that much quicker.

Last year, Pistachio’s launched a Super Bowl ad campaign starring Stephen Colbert that went viral all over Tumblr. Clips of Colbert were used for multiple GIFs as their popularity surged.

This year, as NBC streams the content on Tumblr, fans are hoping to catch the most viral commercials first, and transform them onto their own Tumblr page, creating viral sensations like Pistachios did last year. Pepsi, Skittles, and Go Daddy are just a few brands to keep an eye on, because of their history for making popular Super Bowl commercials, for the next big thing on Tumblr on Super Bowl Sunday.
