Brendan Rodgers: Liverpool will challenge for the title next season (Video)

Brendan Rodgers says Liverpool will challenge for the title in 2015/2016 campaign

Many will say that Brendan Rodger’s side should be challenging for the English Premier League title this year, but with 16 games remaining and Liverpool sitting in 8th spot it seems unlikely at best. Rodger’s spent over $177,000,000 on new players over the summer of 2014, and it is widely regarded that he miss used a lot of that money with signing such as Mario Ballotelli and Dejan Lovren. Neither of which have turned out to have any impact whatsoever.

Liverpool started the season in awful fashion, losing a series of games to teams they were expected to beat. After such an astonishing 2013/2014 season where Liverpool defied all the odds and finished second in the league; coming so close to winning the entire thing, it wasn’t unreasonable to expect Liverpool to repeat the efforts and challenge again this season. However after selling their star Striker Luis Suarez to Barcelona, and trying to induct a series of new players in to the squad, the team failed to adjust and fell from grace. In saying that though, Liverpool seem to have turned a corner of late after winning 8 of their last 9 games, drawing one. It is a run of games that has warranted questions from the media asking the manager what he expects to achieve.

In an interview today, Rodger’s said he fully expects his team to challenge next year.

"“This season was always going to be difficult”- Rodgers"

He went on to say that all the changes in the summer made it apparent that his team’s only aim was to retain a place in the European Champions League.

"“With so many changes and everything that happened, we weren’t going to challenge for the league this year and that’s the reality”- Rodgers"

The Northern Irishman said that the goal this year is to integrate all the new players in to the team and try to win a cup competition and then next year challenge for the English Premier League title.

"“Come next summer we will be ready to challenge for the title again, next year!”- Rodgers"

In addition to talking about the teams chances of winning the league next year, he said that Raheem Sterling is close to signing a new contract and that Jordan Henderson is not guaranteed the captaincy after Steven Gerrard completes his move to L.A Galaxy. However, he did go on to say that if he continues his good form that he will be the favorite for the job.
