Rodgers expects Sterling to commit future to Liverpool

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers expects young forward Raheem Sterling to sign a new deal very shortly, defusing any transfer rumors linking the youngster with a move away from Anfield.

Raheem Sterling, the 20-year-old England international, has two years left on his current contract with Liverpool but has been linked with a potential move away from the club.

However, Rodgers has stated that negotiations between the player and the club’s representatives have been ongoing and he expects Sterling to extend his future at the club soon.

“It is something the club are speaking with his representatives on and I would think that would be concluded imminently,” he said.

“The player is very happy and it (the delay) is nothing to do with Raheem. He wants to be here, so hopefully we get the solution on that very soon.”

Sterling has been a revelation in the Premier League since he made his debut three seasons ago, and has become a firm fan favorite at Anfield.

However, the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona last summer, combined with many of Rodgers’ new signings failing to make an immediate impact on the pitch has led to a largely disappointing season for The Reds.

Coutinho and Lallana have been inconsistent, Balotelli has yet to perform, and both Emre Can and Lazar Markovic have failed to make any significant impact, in a Liverpool team which desperately requires its youngsters and new signings to perform.

Suarez’s departure left a massive void up front which their marquee summer signing Mario Balotelli has failed to replace. Suarez scored a record 31 goals in the Premier League last season, and Mario Balotelli is still to bag his first.

Granted, Daniel Sturridge has been injured for the majority of the season, but Liverpool’s four strikers (Lambert, Borini, Balotelli and Sturridge) have netted just three league goals between them.

Raheem Sterling has scored four times in the league this season, and has contributed seven assists. His services are undeniably invaluable at Liverpool, and Rodgers’ must hold onto him if he is to attain any hope of building his squad, rather than seeing them regress like this season.
