Wrigley Field renovations being thwarted again with another lawsuit from rooftop owners

More from Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs and owner Tom Ricketts are familiar with hits. Sadly, lately, they’re more of the lawsuit kind in the courtroom than on the field.

The Chicago Tribune reports two rooftop owners, Lakeview Baseball Club and Skybox at Sheffield, are claiming the team violated its revenue sharing contract. The 58-page lawsuit also claims the team is breaking the Sherman Trust Act, which Cubs fans all know by heart at this point. If you don’t happen to know, the Sherman Trust Act is something in regards to interstate commerce, fair competition and “our nachos are better than yours kind of thing.”

Cubs fans don’t need to know the specific legalese to know the lawsuit just means Ricketts and crew can’t improve Wrigley with a giant video screen.

"“Although the rooftop license agreement expressly permitted the Cubs to expand the Wrigley Field bleachers. Under no circumstances were the Cubs permitted to erect windscreens or other barriers to obstruct the views from the rooftop business during the 20-year agreement,” the lawsuit says."

Wind screens and more advertising are lame. Another billboard is certainly not progress for fans inside the Friendly Confines. The video screen, however, would be a nice addition, allowing Cubs fans too deep into their conversations to catch the replay of what they’ve missed on the field.
