NBA logos and video game mascots are very easy for me to recognize, because those are my passions in life. I’ve spent an unhealthy amount of time in watching basketball and playing video games, so when I saw on Deadspin and NBA Reddit that someone combined my two loves, well I had to go check it out.
One of my favorite video game series of all time is Megaman. There’s a simplicity to Megaman that makes it easy to pick up, and almost impossible to master. To this day I can’t go through a play through of Megaman without losing a single life. Well here’s the blue bomber repping the Indiana Pacers.
Star Fox is a franchise that is loved by many, but it doesn’t have the same popularity of a Mario or Zelda. Its fantastic on rail shooter style is addicting, and never grows tiresome, despite every level being relatively the same thing. Here are the Minnesota StarFoxes (which is funny because Star Fox’s rival is a group called Star Wolf)
Turing the Los Angeles Lakers into the Pacman’s was a no brainer really. Both classic champions in their respective field with years of success between them. The old yellow ball has had many reboots, rebrands, and re-releases but the formula has never gotten old. Just like the Lakers.
The San Antonio Spurs are one of the greatest franchise’s ever, but you can almost argue they’re underrated. I present to you one of the most underrated games of all time, EarthBound. A fantastic RPG for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, EarthBound is the story of Ness and his friends saving the world as they defeat crooked cops, and sewer rats along the way. It’s a basic game that was a little behind the times during release, but that just added even more charm to a fantastic game. I like to think of Ness, Paula, Jeff, and Poo as Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobli, and Greg Popovich. No matter how old they get we will always love them.
Back in the 90’s everybody’s second favorite team was the Orlando Magic. They had Shaq, Penny, and they played a fun brand of basketball that was unique for the time. Then we have Sonic the Hedgehog; he was the mascot of the Sega Genesis and everybody’s number two behind the powerhouse of Mario. Sadly, both the Magic and Sonic hit a bit of a rough patch after their glory days. Here’s to hoping both franchises can turn things around and recapture some of their former glory.
Finally, we have the Toronto Raptors being replaced with the most popular dinosaur in video games, Yoshi. There’s no real relation to this other than it is the perfect match. Yoshi had multiple colors, including red, and he’s a dinosaur. Personally, I think the Raptors should just keep this as their main logo.
