Only it was ruled to not be a catch because he didn’t maintain control through the process. Common sense and the naked eye perceived it to be a catch to just about everyone watching the game, but the rules in place determined it wasn’t.
Green Bay Packers cornerback Sam Shields is amongst those who think it was a catch, and praised Bryant for the catch.
“It was a catch,” Shields said, via ESPN, “But the new rule and at the last minute what happened, that’s what the refs came up with. I never said he didn’t catch it. He made a helluva catch I was in great coverage. Like I said, it was good on good and he came up with the catch.”
One of the biggest contentions over the call was the lack of a football move, but many pointed to Bryant extending for the goal line as evidence that he had made the catch and transitioned into being a ball carrier role. Shields commented on that and said he saw him extend for the goal line with the football.
“I did look back and I seen him reaching and I guess that’s when he didn’t control the ball as he was doing that,” Shields said.
