Canadian rock band announced their 40th anniversary tour after much debate amongst members.

After an agonizing wait from fans everywhere (myself, included), Rush’s official Twitter announced their 40th anniversary tour for this summer, set to span 34 cities across the US and Canada. R40 will kick off with a bang in Tulsa, Oklahoma on May 8th and conclude in Los Angeles on August 1st.

No stops in Brazil to fill three soccer stadiums with fans this time around.

We’ve all been biting our nails for months and months in anxious anticipation, some doubting whether or not another tour would even take place. There was speculation everywhere almost immediately after the band’s Clockwork Angels tour ended in August of 2013, but according to guitarist Alex Lifeson, the band had agreed to take a year off and not talk music or make plans. When they would talk about it, it was usually some version of “we might like to, but we’re not sure when.”

It was infuriating, but understandable, given Clockwork Angels was a 2-leg tour that spanned nearly a year with a 4-month break in-between, and these men are, you know, in their early sixties. Give ’em a break, guys!

The 40th year since the band’s creation came and went, and a lot more doubt began to surface. Lifeson remained positive, but vocalist and bassist Geddy Lee threw a wrench into the hope brewing in the hearts of many last fall, saying that he was ready to return to the studio to record more music, but unsure about a tour, and that the three members were still in talks over it. When drummer Neil Peart finally spoke up, it was in two minds, as he missed the socializing aspect of being on tour, felt guilty about leaving his family for months at a time– including his five year-old daughter, Olivia. …Okay, they’re forgiven for taking so long to come to a decision, in my mind!

And really, there was never anything to forgive, because when these guys come to a decision to get back together and make music, whether live or in the studio, they’re still the best of the best to this day. Which is why, when the news broke from the official website saying that it was possible that the upcoming tour would be “their last major tour of this magnitude”, you know it’ll be the one event this year that you do not want to miss!
