The 5 greatest moments Steven Gerrard has had for Liverpool

With only a few months to go before Steven Gerrard waves goodbye to Liverpool, I’ve decided to take a look back at his finest moments for the club.

More from Premier League

Liverpool fans are still coming to terms with the fact that their captain and hero for so many years, is leaving for a sunnier climate. There are no hard feelings of course, Gerrard has done everything the right way and has been very respectful to the club he loves so much.

In addition to that, no Liverpool fan has a right to be bitter over the legend making the move. He has lived Liverpool FC even before making his first team debut in November of 1998. He stayed loyal when others wouldn’t have, for example when he was in his prime and Real Madrid tried to sign him…twice. Yes it’s been a loyal career for Gerrard, filled with highs and lows.

I’m going to show you what I think, have been his finest moments.

5: Manchester Utd 1 : 4 Liverpool (In Old Trafford)

Back in 2009 Liverpool went to Old Trafford looking to revive a title challenge by beating the league leaders at home, something that was rare for any team at that time, especially Liverpool who rarely beat their arch rivals on the road. Things didn’t look great when Ronaldo scored an early penalty, Liverpool fans world wide were beginning to think “here we go again.”

However a rejuvenated Liverpool, inspired by Gerrard fought back and after Fernando Torres equalized, the captain made and scored the penalty to put the Reds in front. The game ended 4-1 to Liverpool, it was the first time Manchester Utd conceded 4 goals at home in 17 years.

A sweet moment for the captain indeed.

4: A hat-trick against arch rivals Everton.

It’s well known that this is one of the fiercest rivalries in the world of football, as less than a mile separates the stadiums of each team. The football rivalry in the city is well documented, and even though they live their daily lives side by side- when it comes to football, there is pure hatred.

This is why this hat-trick means more to Gerrard than any other of his career. The fact that it happened to fall on then Everton manager David Moyes’ 10th anniversary, well that just made it all the sweeter. In addition to all that, it was Steven’s 400th game for the club. The game ended 3-0 to Liverpool, with Gerrard scoring all the goals, obviously.

3: Last gasp goal to beat Olympiakos and send Liverpool through.

The way things stood in the 2004/2005 UEFA Champions League group stage, Liverpool went in to the final game against Olympiakos needing to win by two clear goals to advance to the knockout rounds.

It was unheard of for the team to go out in the group stages, and this would have been a disaster, especially in front of a home crowd. The stage seemed set for an upset when Brazilian legend Rivaldo scored to put the visitors in front before half time.

Liverpool needed 3 goals in the second half or they were out. It seemed to be all going wrong after a few missed chances and a wrong decision leading to a dis-allowed goal. Fans thought it was too little too late when they scored one, then two….surely it was too late now in the 87th minute of the game. Enter Captain fantastic.
