The Cleveland Browns might have an interest after all in bringing Brian Hoyer back into the fold
The Cleveland Browns have expressed an interest in bringing back quarterback Brian Hoyer, according to his agent Joe Linta. It’s been widely speculated that Hoyer and the team are set to part ways, but it appears that they might want to give him one more shot in some fashion or another.
“We never got to the numbers part,” Linta told the Akron Beacon Journal. “They called and said they were interested in bringing him back.”
Hoyer started the season for the Browns last year over polarizing rookie Johnny Manziel, and for a time he had the team in a pretty solid position, taking the top spot in the AFC North, making it appear as if the culture was changing with the Browns.
However, the wheels fell off, along with Hoyer’s play, and he was eventually pulled in favor of Manziel, who didn’t play much better in any sense.
Now it seems that the only catch to Hoyer actually agreeing to come back to the Browns is if they promise him the starting job once again. Although, an open competition might sway him back as well, as he already knows he can beat Manziel in that aspect.
“I think the only thing that would make him not (want to) come back is if they said Manziel or whoever we take in the draft or whoever we sign in free agency is going to be the starter and you will only be the backup,” Linta said. “I think that would probably drive him away a little bit.
“If Pettine said, ‘Hey, it’s going to be an open competition again between you and Johnny,’ great, let’s go. … (Hoyer) wants to play. The kid wants to have an opportunity to compete and play.”
Last season Hoyer threw for 3,326 yards with 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
