Mike Krzyzewski has further cemented himself as one of the best coaches in the history of any sport
Duke Blue Devils head coach Mike Krzyzewski has further cemented his spot at the top of the college basketball coaching mountain on Sunday, recording the 1,000th win of his career with a 77-68 win over the St. John’s Red Storm inside the famed Madison Square Garden, the same venue in which he broke the all-time wins record.
This one, like many other times he and his Duke teams have had to play in the Garden, was not easy, as they had to erase a 10-point deficit in the second half. Ultimately, though, they did erase that deficit and Coach K was able to get that monumental win.
"Mike Krzyzewski broke Bob Knight’s D-1 men’s wins record in 2011 at Madison Square Garden. Today he got his 1,000th win at the same arena — ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) January 25, 2015"
Coming into the 2014-15 college basketball season, most people had their eyes on this particular moment and it has finally happened.
Mike Krzyzewski began the journey to this moment not in Durham with the Blue Devils, rather he began his coaching career at his alma mater, Army. Coach K coached the Black Knights from 1975-1980, using the knowledge that was given to him by his mentor and the man that coached him as a player at Army, Bob Knight.
In 1980, Krzyzewski moved on to Duke, where his tear through the college basketball ranks really began. 11 years after his arrival, Coach K had taken the dormant Duke basketball program from afterthought to national champions, capturing his first of four national championships in 1991. He would repeat in 1992 and go on to win the final two titles in 2001 and 2010.
After the win today, Krzyzewski’s overall record as a college basketball head coach moves to 1,000-308, a winning percentage of nearly 80 percent. His overall record at Army was 73-59 and he is now 927-249 at Duke.
Congratulations to one of the most respected coaches not only in the game of basketball, but in all of sports.
