New England Patriots: Top Super Bowl storylines
The Well Traveled Pete Carroll Was Once Replaced In New England By Bill Belichick
There was a time, oh about twenty years ago, when Pete Carroll was the hot coaching commodity that several teams tried to hire. A defensive coordinator known for his high energy and positive attitude, Carroll got his first break with the Jets in 1994.
He was fired after he went 6-10 in his only season.
After another coordinator position, he got his next head coaching opportunity in 1997 – with the New England Patriots.
He won a division title his first year, but the team slid backward the following two seasons, and he was fired again in 1999. Of course, he was replaced by Bill Belichick and the Patriots went on to make all kinds of history.
Pete’s pro coaching career appeared to be over at that point.
That same positive personality served him well, however. Carroll landed at USC, where he rebuilt the program and brought it back to the heights of college football.
And now here we are, with Carroll having accepted the gig with the Seahawks and facing his old team in the Super Bowl. Carroll vs Belichick, for all the marbles.
A delicious storyline indeed.
