20 best Super Bowl commercials of all-time
By Bryce Olin
18. Chrysler “Imported From Detroit”
Back in 2011, if you remember, the Super Bowl was played during the recession. The auto industry, which has massive ties to the Detroit area, the “Motor City,” had been bailed out by the Federal Government two years earlier, and the city of Detroit was struggling as a whole.
Because of all those reasons, Chrysler’s Super Bowl spot for the Chrysler 200 carried more weight than the average Super Bowl ad.
According to the NY Post, Chrysler spent $9 million on the ad and the spot in the Super Bowl, which was also directed by Samuel Bayer, the director of the most recent installment of The Nightmare on Elm Street and one of the biggest names in cinematography, to capture some truly spectacular shots of Detroit.
Plus, it features a sick cameo from Detroit’s own, the one-and-only Eminem and the instrumental build up of his hit song, “Lose Yourself.”
As a cynic, I see how this commercial might come across a little bit cheesy or even corny, but I think it’s actually a pretty solid representation of what Detroit was feeling as a city at the time.
Typically, I like the funnier Super Bowl commercials, but the inspirational and motivational commercials can be good, too, if done correctly.
