Michigan’s Greg Mattison Fumbles Wooing Daishon Neal
Two golden rules of college recruiting were broken yesterday by Michigan’s defensive line coach, Greg Mattison, when he was summarily kicked out of the home of 6-foot-7, 250-pound Daishon Neal.
Rule No. 1 – Kiss Ass! Many high school players and their families are so used to getting whatever they want in their school and community that unless their spoiled keister’s get spit-shined by recruiters they’re out.
Rule No. 2 – Do Not Tell the Truth! Mattison reportedly told Neal the only chance he had of attending Michigan was on a football scholarship.
Breaking Rule 1 & 2 ending up sinking Michigan’s chances.
Neal's father says Michigan's coaching staff made one mistake, said his son probably wouldn't be able to get into school w/out football

At that point, Neal's father told U-M's coaching staff to leave the house -- he was leaning toward U-M, then threw them out of the house

Neal: "They basically tried to call me stupid in my own house." ... Apparently Michigan offended the Neal family quite a bit there

Daishon Neal’s academic acumen is not publicly known. However, assuming his transcripts were received by Michigan as part of the recruiting process, it is safe to assume Greg Mattison’s statement was fair and accurate. Up until Mattison’s ‘incendiary’ comment, things were going well with the visit.
Daishon Neal's father: "Michigan was a powerhouse, they stormed in hard and tried to get him."

Matttison, a respected coach and recruiter obviously would never wish to offend a potential talented recruit. Of course, offense is in the ear of the scholarship owner and more bees are caught with honey.
The truth… only wanted when it is in favor of the one requesting it. Neal went on and signed with home state university, Nebraska. Michigan is unable to comment publicly with their side of the story per NCAA rules regarding unsigned recruits.
Neal no doubt will show his skills on the football field in the Big Ten. If he really wants to make a point, he’ll get on the Dean’s list at Nebraska.
