NFL Power Rankings: 30 best TE of all-time
No. 29 Jerry Smith, Washington Redskins
Jerry Smith was a stalwart on the Washington Redskins from 1965-1977. He put up some impressive stats, including 60 career touchdowns. Smith topped 6 touchdowns in a season 6 times, earning 2 Pro Bowl invitations and an All-Pro selection. His best season came in 1967, when he caught 67 passes for 849 yards and 12 touchdowns – impressive numbers for a tight end at that time. He was versatile enough to play split end and flanker at times as well.
Smith was the subject of a documentary last year on the NFL Network. A Football Life chronicled his remarkable career, and his secret life as a gay man in the NFL. Sadly, he died of AIDS in 1986, at only 43 years old.
