The Detroit Pistons are seriously considering a trade for Miami Heat point guard Norris Cole after Brandon Jennings suffered a torn Achilles.

Stan Van Gundy decided to make a big move by cutting forward Josh Smith earlier this season, but the Detroit Pistons quickly proved him right and got back into playoff contention in the Eastern Conference.

Brandon Jennings was a huge part of that winning streak to get back into playoff contention, but the Pistons suffered a huge loss when they learned that he will miss the remainder of the season following a torn Achilles. The Pistons still have a very solid point guard option in D.J. Augustin, but they need to bring in a better backup for him. That is where the trade market will come into effect.

According to a report from the Northeast Ohio Media Group, the Pistons are strongly considering a trade for the Miami Heat’s Norris Cole.

Cole would certainly be an intriguing option for the Pistons, and would fill the backup point guard role perfectly. It would be interesting to hear what type of value the Heat would want back in return, but it likely wouldn’t be too terribly expensive.

"Miami has sent the word out that the defensive specialist can be had. There’s nothing imminent at this point and talks have been described as “exploratory,” sources said. With Brandon Jennings out for the season with a torn Achilles, Detroit is searching for a third point guard to pacify the loss. The plan is to acquire a short-term option and evaluate that player at the end of the season, one league source said."

There is no denying the talent that the 26-year-old point guard has, and the extended minutes would look very good for him.

So far this season, Cole is averaging 6.2 points, 3.4 assists, and 2.3 rebounds per game. He has been struggling with his shot a bit, shooting just 38.6 percent from the floor overall and 23.9 percent from behind the three-point arc. Both of those numbers are by far the lowest of his career, but perhaps a change of scenery would be good for him.

Detroit needs to make a move in the near future to bring in a better backup point guard. Nothing is imminent at this point in time, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Pistons hurry trade talks along. It is going to be a very interesting trade deadline on February 19th and leading up until then, and the Pistons are likely to play a part in that.
