Super Bowl 49: Top 15 quarterback performances all-time
By Brad Rowland
4) Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints, Super Bowl XLIV
Only Phil Simms finished a Super Bowl with a better completion rate than Drew Brees in 2010, and when you combine that with the unlikelihood of the New Orleans victory, legends are born.
Brees hit on 32 of his 39 pass attempts for an 82% completion clip, and he finished with 288 yards and 2 touchdowns as a result. New Orleans was a significant underdog against Peyton Manning and the Colts in this spot, but with some help from Sean Payton and a timely onside kick, Brees and his crew were able to secure the win, and he was nearly flawless in doing so.
If there is a knock on this showing, it was in the fact that Brees averaged only 7.4 yards per attempt, but in the same breath, that was clearly the game plan here. New Orleans was desperately trying to keep the ball out of Manning’s hands (it worked), and he executed things perfectly on the way to the first title in Saints history.
