Seahawks linebacker Bruce Irvin believes that their defense could be considered one of the best all-time.

He’s not wrong.

The Seattle Seahawks are preparing to defend their Super Bowl title this Sunday in Super Bowl XLIX against the New England Patriots and be the first team to repeat as Super Bowl Champions since the Patriots accomplished that feet in 2004 and 2005.

Seahawks linebacker Bruce Irvin believes that, if they can pull off winning back-to-back championships, their defense would have to be put in the conversation as one of the best defensive units of all-time.

"I definitely feel like we’ll go out as one of the top defenses to ever play the NFL, Irvin said. But, we got to win first. I don’t want to talk about winning the game. We just got to prepare and keep practicing"

When you talk about the best defenses of all-time, you will immediately think about the ’85 Chicago Bears and the 2000 Baltimore Ravens and the ’76 Pittsburgh Steelers. All these defenses were feared by opposing offenses and could win games on their own.

One other thing these defenses have in common, is that they all won championships. The Bears didn’t win in ’85, but they did win in ’86 with the same core of players.

The Seahawks defense and the Legion of Boom absolutely strike fear into opposing offenses. They are extremely physical and will make you pay the price to make plays. They also have the ability to single-handedly win games, just look at what they did against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship game two weeks ago.

Also, like those other legendary defensive units, they have a championship under their belt already. If they are able to capture a second championship, and it being a back-to-back, there is no reason why this defensive unit doesn’t belong amongst the best of all-time.

Irvin attributes their success to the depth of players that they have on defense. He believes that their backups could be starters on other teams. That is actually very true, as we saw Walter Thurmond III, who was in a supporting role with the Seahawks, sign with the New York Giants last offseason and was a starter for the Giants until he was injured and placed on injured reserve.

The Seahawks defense demonstrated their dominance in Super Bowl XLVIII, as they shut down the NFL’s most potent offense in the Denver Broncos to win their first Super Bowl in franchise history. If they can shut down Tom Brady and the New England Patriots this time around and win their second championship in as many years, they will most certainly make a good case for themselves.
