Richard Sherman is the ready to lead the Seattle Seahawks defense toward a second straight Super Bowl, but could the impending birth of his son have an effect on his playing status?
The Seattle Seahawks earned a second consecutive berth to the Super Bowl and hope to be the first NFL team to repeat as Super Bowl champions since the New England Patriots in 2004, but the birth of Richard Sherman’s son could play a significant impact on the game.

Sherman and his girlfriend Ashley Moss are anticipating the birth of their son who is expected to arrive in early February, but what happens if their son makes an early arrival and Ashley goes into labor on Super Bowl Sunday?
“That’s a topic of debate?” Sherman said, via ESPN. “I’m focused on the game. He’s not supposed to come on Sunday. If he does, that would change some things. I’ve thought about the possibility of his coming during the game or coming before the game.
“We have things in place in case that happens. We’ll cross that bridge when we get there. But I didn’t know it was a topic of national debate, honestly. I would not like to miss the birth of my first kid, but hopefully and God willing, we won’t have to cross that bridge.”
No matter what Sherman would decide to do in this hypothetical situation, the decision is his, and I would surmise he wouldn’t make any decision without the blessing of Ashley and family. Players have missed births of their children in the past and players have missed games to attend the birth like New York Mets’ Daniel Murphy.
But like Sherman said he would not like to miss the birth of his first kid and hopefully his son can do him a favor and wait a little longer.
Sherman’s availability for the Super Bowl originally came into question after he suffered a sprained elbow in the NFC Championship Game against the Green Bay Packers, but barring an early labor you can expect to see No. 25 and arguably the best cornerback in the NFL taking the field on Sunday.
But could you imagine welcoming your first child into the world hours before or after playing in and winning the Super Bowl? Talk about a happy birthday.
