Martellus Bennett says Marc Trestman will be better coordinator than head coach
Martellus Bennett thinks that his former head coach Marc Trestman will be better suited as an offensive coordinator.
Marc Trestman was fired by the Chicago Bears this offseason following a second failed year as head coach. He was hailed as a quarterback whisperer with Josh McCown, which has landed an offensive coordinator position in Baltimore. That’s not to suggest that Marc Trestman will never be a good head coach, just that the Chicago Bears wasn’t the right place for Trestman to be head coach.
Bears tight end Martellus Bennett his former head coach had a hard time dealing with all the big personalities in the locker room. It’s not hard to imagine that’s true, with the likes of Bennett, Lance Briggs, Charles Tillman, Brandon Marshall, etc. It does seem like Trestman lost the locker room a bit this past season, as the Bears finished the season with a very disappointing 5-11 record.

There’s no doubt that Trestman is a great play-caller. The Bears offense, even though it wasn’t great this season, was still able to put up points. Even on defense, the play-calling was usually the right play at the time and he made the right decision strategically.
However, the problem seemed to be execution with this Bears team. That’s what Bennett told NFL Network on Friday was the main problem.
"Trestman, I think, first off, the issue that he had, probably, was managing us all, all the different personalities, Bennett said. There’s a lot of big personalities. And I think, for a first-time head coach in the NFL, dealing with all the personalities that you have, I think that’s hard when you got guys like me, you know, [Brandon] Marshall … Lance Briggs on defense, (Charles) Tillman … Calling plays, he was excellent. I think he’s going to be an excellent coordinator for the Ravens. Strategically, he was great. But on the field, guys just weren’t executing."
It is very difficult for a first time head coach to come in to that type of locker room. It’s not that the players didn’t respect Trestman, it’s just a rookie head coach doesn’t carry a lot of weight and doesn’t know how to get through to guys that are established NFL veterans.
This more than likely played a part in the Bears parting ways with Trestman and going in a different direction with John Fox as the new head coach. Fox is a much more experienced head coach and, not only that, he’s a new face to the players. Fox brings a lot of experience and just brought the Denver Broncos to the Super Bowl last year, he’ll have instant respect from the players.
The fact that he’s a very defensive minded head coach I’m sure played a big part in his hiring as well. Chicago’s defense has been non-existent as of late, which is very unlike this organization. They brought in Fox to bring that ferociousness back to the Chicago Bears defense.
