VCU announces G Brian Weber is done for the season after tearing ACL.

If Virginia Commonwealth University wants to make a deep run in the upcoming March Madness tournament, they’ll have to do it without 6-2 guard Briante Weber who the team announces will miss the rest of the season with an ACL injury.

Suffering the injury in the second half of VCU’s matchup against Richmond on a jump stop, the team was unclear if the injury would be one that’d sideline him for the rest of the season. Unfortunately, that was the case for the fourth-year player.

The timing of this injury was very unfortunate for Weber. Already third in most steals ever by a NCAA Division I player, Weber was 11 steals away from toppling the all-time record of 385 steals set by Providence guard John Linehan in 2002 (it should also be mentioned that Providence holds the top two all-time steals spot, with the second guy being Eric Murdock with 376 steals).

With Weber’s collegiate career over, it’s unclear what’s next for the guard, whether it be declaring for the 2015 NBA Draft, joining the NBA Developmental League or heading overseas like many players who came before him.

For VCU, the No. 14 ranked team in the nation will have to tough it out without their lead guard. Despite Weber only averaging 7.9 points on a career-low 38 percent shooting, VCU relied heavily on the guard to lead their offense (averages 4.4 assists), as well as spearhead their defense, as seen by the nation-high 3.8 steals per game.

Without Weber, VCU will look to JeQuan Lewis, Terry Larrier, and Doug Brooks to make up for his absence.
