How To Bet On Super Bowl 49

Betting on NFL games has gotten absurdly popular in recent years and plenty of money goes down on the Super Bowl.

Football is probably the most popular sport to bet on in America and the Super Bowl, of course, is the culmination of that.

Over $100 million in betting receipts are generated by the Super Bowl and then billions of dollars in revenue besides that. If you’re planning on betting on the Super Bowl, take a look at these betting tips and terms.

Simply picking the winner is not the only way to bet on the Super Bowl. There are plenty of proposition bets that can be made. Proposition bets are usually only available for special games, like the Super Bowl, and are wagers made on nearly every occurrence in the game. They can be made on anything from who will win the coin toss, to the number of the player who scores first. Many times more prop bets appear as the game goes on.

Some prop bets offered this year, courtesy of the Tacoma News Tribune.

"How long will it take Idina Menzel to sing the National Anthem? Will she forget a word? How many times will ā€œdeflated ballsā€ be mentioned during the game? Will Marshawn Lynch grab his crotch after a touchdown? What will be the color of the Gatorade dumped on the winning coach? Will Patriots coach Bill Belichick smile during the game? How many times will model Gisele Bundchen (Patriot quarterback Tom Brady’s wife) be shown on TV during the game?"

Away from the exotic bets, the spread bet is the most common and popular type of bet for football wagering. For example, if it’s the Seahawks -3, that means that a player only wins if the Seahawks beat the Patriots by at least four points. If the Seahawks only win by three points, then the bet is no action and money is returned. If the Seahawks lose or win by two points or less, the bet is then a losing bet.

The money line is a straight bet on who will win the game. This is where the odds come into play. The betting on the Super Bowl started with the Seahawks being favored, but on Wednesday before the game, the Patriots have a slight edge.

The over/under bet is a bet on the combined score of the game and whether it will or will not exceed a predetermined figure. If the over/under of a game is 50 and the player chooses over, they will win if the teams score 51 points or more combined.

Three of the most popular sites for football betting are 5Dimes, Odds Shark and Bovada. All three sites have plenty of current information about all the Super Bowl bets and odds. Just register an account and test your luck on the biggest football day of the year to see if you can add some coin to your wallet.

Or, if you so choose, and if your state is on the bandwagon, you can head off to your local casino to toss down a bet or two and do your best Floyd Mayweather impression on this Super Bowl Sunday.
