Taking a look at the NHL three stars from this past week’s NHL action

Welcome to another edition of the NHL Three Stars of the Week where we will recognize three players who had outstanding performances during this past week’s NHL action. Check back every Sunday for a new list of three stars for the previous week’s play.

No. 1 Star: Carey Price, Montreal Canadiens

Entering Saturday night’s game against the Washington Capitals the Montreal Canadiens had won four games in a row, as well as 14 of their last 18 games. In that time goaltender Carey Price is an impressive 12-2-1 with a .948 save percentage. Well that stellar play continued, with Price stopping all 36 Capitals shots, earning him his 29th career shutout, tying him with Patrick Roy for fifth on the Canadiens all-time list. It was also Price’s second consecutive shutout, as he shut the door for the Canadiens on Thursday night, stopping all 24 New York Rangers shots in a 1-0 win. It’s also his sixth shutout in 17 appearances against the Rangers.

No. 2 Star: Kris Letang, Pittsburgh Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins came back from the All-Star break without Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Despite those two sizeable holes up front, the Penguins offense kept trucking along. A big part of that was Kris Letang, who had five assists in Tuesday’s game against the Winnipeg Jets and was making his first start since missing a game with a concussion. Letang played well on both ends of the ice – moving up to contribute on offense, while also back checking to stop the Jets efforts to come back in the third period. He (along with the rest of the Penguins) was held off the score sheet the following night against the Washington Capitals. However, Letang bounced back with two assists in the Penguins 2-1 overtime win over the New Jersey Devils Friday night.

No. 3 Star: Cedric Paquette, Winnipeg Jets

Cedric Paquette scored his first career hat trick in a 5-1 Tampa Bay Lightning win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday. Paquette was called up from the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch on October 24th and had gone 29 games without scoring prior to the All-Star break. Since then he has scored five goals in three games, including one in Tuesday’s 4-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, as well as one more last night’s 3-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. On Thursday he got the Lightning on the board first, scoring just 2:03 into the first period. His second of the night came in the closing minute of the first. He completed the hat trick 11:03 in the second period while the Lightning were short-handed.
