Who is Chris Matthews: Super Bowl 49 breakout star
Chris Matthews fills stat sheet with impressive catches in Super Bowl 49
Who is this Chris Matthews guy, anyways? No, not the Hardball guy from MSNBC. The unheralded, undrafted receiver making waves for the Seahawks in the Super Bowl.
No one was expecting the Seattle Seahawks wide receiver to have such a huge day at Super Bowl 49. Most people probably didn’t even know who he was until he came down with an incredible touchdown catch from Russell Wilson with two seconds to go in the first half.
This is a man who was working at Foot Locker not too long ago.
Chris Matthews has really come out of nowhere to contribute huge numbers for the Seahawks. He leads all receivers with 4 receptions, 109 receiving yards and one touchdown reception. He also hauled in an incredible catch at the beginning of the second half that led to a field goal for the Seahawks.
Not bad for a man that had no prior receptions in the NFL.
In fact, his last 100+ receiving yards game was when he was still in college at Kentucky (via prosportsreference.com). After Kentucky, he was cut by the Cleveland Browns before resurfacing with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League.
Matthews, interestingly enough, is a cousin of hall-of-famer Reggie White… no stranger to the Super Bowl himself.
Look for Chris Matthews to continue filling the stat sheet as Super Bowl 49 goes down to the wire (hopefully). What a coming out party for a receiver who was widely unknown prior to today.
