EA and DICE have released a piece of concept art for the much anticipated “Star Wars Battlefront” to pique our curiosity while we wait for release.
All had been quiet on the “Star Wars Battlefront” … ahem … front since EA and DICE previewed a glimpse of its revival of the Frostbite Engine 3 at E3 2014.
Still targeted for a release for the holiday season later this year, the game makers have provided a little piece of concept art from the forest moon of Endor.
In the image, featured above, there are a pair of rebels—one armed with the standard, garden-variety blaster and the other with a scoped rifle of some sort—have flanked a pair of Stormtroopers as the Endorian landscape burns in the background.
In case you haven’t seen it in a while, or just want to see it again, here is the trailer that was unveiled at E3 back in June.
The concept art provides a few clues—the glimpse of Ewok villages in the distance hints at verticality in the map’s design and a defeated all terrain scout transport lies smoking in the woods, perhaps providing a notion that destroyed vehicles will remain on the battlefields of the game.

DICE is still not saying much about the gameplay specifics, but design director Niklas Fegraeus told IGN some of what’s to come when the game drops this fall.
“The scale of our maps and modes offer a great variety” depending on the location. For instance, the ice planet of Hoth will be a different size than the densely wooded Endor.
“We have actually made the decision to specifically tailor certain maps to certain game modes,” Fegraeus said. “What we get from that is not only incredibly varied scales, but also gameplay that will allow players to live out some of their most memorable Star Wars battle fantasies.”
DICE is employing photogrammetry in SWB, wherein developers can use photographed images to achieve remarkable levels of detail—something that was seen in 2014’s “The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.”
“Perhaps the hardest part about bringing the franchise back is managing expectations,” Fegraeus said. “Star Wars fans, including ourselves, are incredibly passionate about the universe. Each of us have our own personal favorites.
“However, with the talent we have here at DICE, the Frostbite technology at our fingertips and the fantastic working relationship we have with Lucas, I believe we will deliver a Star Wars experience that excites fans around the world and gives them the chance to play out battles in some of the most iconic locales in the series’ history.”
The reveal of the game is set for this spring. It is the first release in the Battlefront series since “Elite Squadron” for the PSP and Nintendo DS in 2009 and the first Star Wars release—(non-Lego category) since “Star Wars: The Old Republic” in 2011.
