The New York Jets quarterback knows this is the most important offseason of his career

Geno Smith’s career as the Jets quarterback hasn’t started the way he expected it to and with a new coaching staff under new head coach Todd Bowles coming in, he might not have too many more shots to grab hold of the starting quarterback position for the future.

The Jets are coming off a season in which they went 4-12 and flip-flopped between Smith and Mike Vick throughout the season.

With the No. 6 pick in this year’s draft, the Jets could draft a quarterback to compete with Smith for the starting position.

With the potential competition, Smith knows he has to improve and work hard this offseason. ā€œI wouldn’t say it’s my last chance, but it’s definitely a very, very vital offseason for myself and very important for a lot of people for a lot of reasons,ā€ Smith said Saturday.

Luckily for Smith, new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey has used spread offense packages in the past which are similar to style SmithĀ favors.

Smith knows that the familiarity with the type of offensive system Gailey runs can help him at the quarterback position.

ā€œThe familiarity with it will help,ā€ Smith said to the New York Post, ā€œI don’t know what the ins-and-outs of his offense is, but I can’t wait to get back into it and learn it and develop timing with the guys. I’ll try and learn as much as I can without actually having the playbook.ā€

In his short two-year career, Smith has thrown 25 touchdowns to 34 interceptions with just a 57.5% completion percentage. At times, he has shown ability when he can get out on the move.

Gailey, under the leadership of Bowles, just might be what Smith needs to get his career going as a Jet and giving them something to build on for the future. If he can’t however, his time as a Jet could be coming to an end.

The Jets have lots of money to spend in free agency; maybe they could acquire some weapons offensively to help their young quarterback out?

Most of all, if they decide Smith is the guy for 2015, they need to let him be the guy and not flip-flop between quarterbacks and provide some consistency for the quarterback.

Smith knows this offseason is important and it appears he is handling everything seriously and as a professional.
