New England Patriots fans think that their team will win because they think Sam Adams is the best beer in the country.
It doesn’t make any less sense than any other random reason why either team will win the Super Bowl, so the Patriots fans thinking their team will win thanks to the proliferation of Sam Adams brewing is no less silly than Seahawks fans thinking their team has it thanks to Seattle being one of the top cities for craft brewing, not to mention the state of Washington.
Let’s talk about beer for the NFL’s big game though. Both Seattle and New England are great craft beer regions. In Boston, Sam Adams is the best-selling craft beer company in the country. In Seattle, some of the key players starting the craft beer revolution in the last half of the 00’s include Elysian Brewing, which was just sold to Anheuser-Busch. The purchase of such a big player in Seattle’s brew scene is likely to have major ramifications to the exposure of Seattle beer.
Elysian is also having a bit of a friendly wager with Boston’s Harpoon Brewing, per WIBW.
"Three kegs of beer from each brewery will be poured in the opposite breweries’ taprooms the week after the big game. The loser will be required to fly the flag of the winning team until the beer is gone."
Washington area breweries have been cashing in on the Seahawks success of late with their beer names. Brews such as 12th Man Pale and Hawk One Lager are in prominent places with the Seahawks gear in stores.
Both cities have a strong roster of beers heading into the big game and WIBW has a nice breakdown. This writer is very familiar with Seattle’s beer scene, but not as much with New England.
A good choice for Seattle’s quarterback is the XXXXX Stout by Pike Brewing, which correctly pegs it as full of chocolate and espresso flavors.
New England’s entry is the Harpoon IPA, described as one of the first IPAs on the East Coast and “right out of Seattle’s playbook” with hoppy Northwest flavor.
In at wide receiver is the New England staple and one of the most popular beers in the country, Sam Adams Boston Lager. Crisp, refreshing, a safe choice.
Seattle’s entry is another football-themed beer with Audible Pale Ale from Redhook, another early pioneer of the craft beer revolution in the city. Redhook, however, is also considered somewhat of a “safe choice” locally these days.
Now that we have quarterbacks and wide receivers, time for the hail Mary.
Massachusetts is apparently home to the only Trappist brewery in the country, and their Belgian-style Trappist Ale by Spenser Brewery is definitely a bold call on a day likely to be filled with lagers and IPAs.
For Seattle, a slightly safer call in Sky Hag IPA by up and coming Airways Brewery in Kent, a Seattle suburb. Sky Hag is a hop bomb, packed with bitter hops. It might be the winning play, or it might just be too much.
