Steelers president Dan Rooney would like to see his stadium host the biggest game of the year
Pittsburgh Steelers president Dan Rooney would love to see the biggest football game of the year, the Super Bowl, take place inside the confines of Heinz Field some day, the respected NFL executive recently told the Pittsburgh Tribune.
While cold-weather Super Bowls are far from common, Rooney cited last yearās game being held in New Jersey as one good example of why the league should take a look at the Steel City and a potential host.
āYeah, I think it should happen,āĀ Rooney said.Ā āAs of last year, the (New York) Giants have had one. There have been games in Minnesota and Detroit, places like that. So now you think about it.Ā Of course, youāll have a lot of teams in the Northeast that will want one, but I think Pittsburgh would be a good place for the next one in the North.ā
While Minnesota and Detroit are good examples as well of cold-weather cities that have held the Super Bowl, the fact with them is that the game itself was played inside of a dome. Last season when the NFL placed the game inside Metlife Stadium in New Jersey was really the first time the league testes their luck with an outdoors game. All things considered, while there was a bit of a snow scare early in the week, the experiment pretty much went well. How much the NFL wants to test that luck, though, remains to be seen.
But, anyone who has ever been to the city of Pittsburgh knows that Rooney is telling the truth.
