New England Patriots’ wide receiver Julian Edelman threw regular-season criticism back in Trent Dilfer’s face after the Pats’ 28-24 win in Super Bowl XLIX.
The New England Patriots couldn’t have had more neg-heads entering Super Bowl XLIX, and the newly crowned champions gave ’em plenty to chew on.
The naysaying started months before deflate-gate – Trent Dilfer announced the Pats lost their fire in week 4 of the regular season.

“You come to a bully’s house and you get the snot beat out of you,” Dilfer said in the postgame show following the Kansas City Chiefs’ soul-crushing 41-14 victory over the Patriots. “We saw a weak team. The New England Patriots, let’s face it, they’re not good anymore.”
Sports commentators making foolish knee-jerk reactions? Unheard of.
Wide receiver Julian Edelman threw it back in Dilfer’s face after the Patriots won Super Bowl XLIX against the Seattle Seahawks.
“What did Trent Dilfer say? ‘The Patriots are the worst team. They can’t win,'”Edelman told reporters, according to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald. “It’s unbelievable to hear that man say that. It’s embarrassing for him.”
Surely the haters’ slow-cooked hatery served as fodder and inspiration for the Pats, who overcame a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter. No Beats by Dre necessary to shut out the noise.
Edelman led the team in receiving yards, catching nine passes for 109 yards and most importantly, one touchdown. In addition, reports say he had a concussion after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit in the fourth quarter.
All things considered, Dilfer owned it well as he admitted his criticism was premature and “embarrassing.”
I totally agree w/ @Edelman11 it was embarrassing of me to write you off after wk 4, lesson learned. Congrats on the win.Onto 2015 #KneeJerk

The victory marked the Patriots’ fourth Super Bowl title in the franchise history, all within the Brady-Belichick era in the last 14 years.
Concussion or no, Edelman called it like it was as New England reclaimed their dynasty status.
