Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald thinks that Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has served his time and should be reinstated.

Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald thinks that Adrian Peterson simply made a mistake and has more than paid for that mistake. He spoke to Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press in St. Paul, Minnesota before the Super Bowl and said that Peterson should be reinstated immediately.

“He’s served his penalty,” Fitzgerald said. “He deserves the opportunity to come back, and I know everybody in the league feels he’s served his time.

Fitzgerald also brought up the fact that Peterson has lost millions of dollars in endorsements and has already apologized.

“I mean, he made a mistake, he’s apologized for it, he’s taken the precautionary steps to make amends for everything and I think he deserves to be back on the field,” Fitzgerald added.

Peterson is currently on the NFL‘s exempt list, and has been since September of last year. While on the list, he cannot participate in any team activities. He attempted to appeal the suspension in December, but was denied. He cannot apply for reinstatement into the league until April 15. However, Peterson and the NFLPA have sued the league asking for immediate reinstatement. A hearing will take place on Friday in a federal court.

Peterson was indicted on a felony charge of child abuse last September to which he pleaded no contest to a lesser charge of misdemeanor assault two months later. Thanks to various Vikings personnel moves, Peterson missed most of the season after playing in one game.

Since Peterson was suspended and eventually lost his appeal, quite a few current players have come out and said they think Peterson has been punished too harshly.  Current Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater said he would like to see Peterson back in Minnesota and that he’s loved playing with him in the short time he’s been able to.

Of course, it’s entirely possible that the Vikings aren’t the team for Peterson if and when he is reinstated. Plenty of teams have reportedly been doing their homework on Peterson in case they have a shot at landing him. One possibility is the Cowboys who might have problems holding onto DeMarco Murray. Peterson did play high school football in Dallas and does have connection to the area, and we all know Cowboys owner Jerry Jones likes to make big signings if he can.
