Grading the NFL head coaching hires
By Bryce Olin
7. San Francisco 49ers: Jim Tomsula
Grade: D-
I know Jim Harbaugh was too intense for the San Francisco 49ers, and the players couldn’t handle his attitude and continue playing for him.
That’s fine, but how can anyone think Jim Tomsula is a good replacement for Harbaugh?
Did anyone watch Tomsula’s first press conference?
Tomsula is as charismatic as Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell is good at calling goal line plays with one minute in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl.
It’s not that Tomsula doesn’t know what he’s doing. He’s been the defensive line coach of the team since 2007. He also was the interim head coach for one game after Mike Singletary was fired in 2010. The 49ers won that game 38-7 over the Arizona Cardinals.
I just hate the fact that the 49ers, a team who went to three straight NFC Championship Games and one Super Bowl, totally abandoned ship after one bad season that was marred by injuries. It’s so weak.
Harbaugh might have been the bad guy, but why not promote Greg Roman or Vic Fangio to head coach and keep the team structure together?
Either, clean house, or actually keep the people around who helped you get there. Those are the two choices the 49ers had.
The 49ers made up their third choice that ends with Tomsula getting fired at the end of the season.
