Since July 11, 1960 this has been Lee’s only published work; however, thanks to a novel that was uncovered by the author’s friend Tonja Carter, this is all about to change. It turns out that there is another book that takes us back to the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama and continues the story of Atticus, Jem, and Scout Finch.

The novel, which is named “Go Set a Watchman,” is scheduled to be released by publisher HarperCollins on July 14th, making this Harper Lee’s first published work in over fifty years.

It turns out that Carter came upon the book in a secure location where it was attached to an original typescript of “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

According to a press release from the publisher, the new story will take place twenty years after the events that played out in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” despite the fact that “Go Set a Watchman” was actually written first. It will tell the story of an older Scout Finch and the struggles she currently faces.

"“Scout (Jean Louise Finch) has returned to Maycomb from New York to visit her father, Atticus,” the press release reads. “She is forced to grapple with issues both personal and political as she tries to understand her father’s attitude toward society, and her own feelings about the place where she was born and spent her childhood.” – HarperCollins"

One of the most interesting things about the new novel is that according to the Associated Press it is being released exactly as it was originally written with absolutely no revisions. This will gives readers and fans of the original novel a chance to experience the story exactly as it was intended to be perceived.

“To Kill a Mockingbird” has been both revered as one of the greatest novels of all time and at the same time it has been banned from many places due to the story’s accentuation of racial elements in the world.

We think that it is Harper Lee’s willingness to tackle the tough issues despite the backlash that may come with it is what truly makes her such a magnificent writer.

We don’t know about you, but we are very anxious to see what Harper Lee has in store for us next. It will be interesting to see what happened after the events that played out in “To Kill a Mockingbird” changed their lives and where they went from that point on.
