Fantasy Football: What To Do With Justin Blackmon?

What are you going to do with Justin Blackmon this year?

Well, I will tell you what I am going to do: I am going to draft him every chance I get. In keeper or dynasty leagues, I have already tried to add him everywhere I could as well. If Justin Blackmon makes his return to the field this season, he is going to be a huge upgrade over anything that the Jaguars could possibly put on the field.

Recently in a report from the Florida Times-Union, Jaguars owner Shad Kahn had this to say about welcoming Blackmon back to the team:

"“Absolutely. As a matter of fact, I’m very optimistic. I think he’s paid his dues. I think he’s got his life together. I think he can be a role model for people who have gone through hard times. We’re waiting for him.”"

I would expect that Blackmon and Blake Bortles would build a nice rapport rather quickly, and that Blackmon would likely help Bortles take his play to another level this year. Blackmon is incredible with the ball after the catch and would likely turn several short passes into nice gains, thus possibly giving Bortles a healthy increase in fantasy value as well.

It would not surprise me to see Blackmon literally lift the whole ship in Jacksonville if he truly has his life in order as Kahn seems to think he does. The Jaguars could field a pretty formidable offense, especially for fantasy purposes with Denard Robinson, Bortles, and Blackmon. The Jaguars also seem to have found a pretty nice wide receiver in Allen Robinson as long as he heals from his fractured foot.

Justin Blackmon, in his rookie campaign, was able to deliver 64 catches on 133 targets for 865 yards and 5 touchdowns. Pretty impressive numbers for a rookie with the well-documented quarterback problems that the Jaguars have had. In 2013, through 4 games, Blackmon was able to amass 29 catches on 48 targets for 415 yards and one touchdown. The talent is not a question for Blackmon, the only issue will be off-the-field problems that could get him suspended.

Assuming that Kahn is correct, Blackmon could wind up being a steal in your drafts this fall if you could acquire him in or around the seventh or ninth round. He could also be an option for a off-season buy-low trade in a dynasty or a deeper keeper league. Depending on how much you trust him, the reward could be equally great.

So don’t go breaking the bank on him, and I am not sure at this point if I would be comfortable spending higher than a fifth round pick on him when there is quite a bit of risk, but I will be excited to see what he can do with Bortles under center.
