The New York Knicks are hoping a team will want to trade for PG Jose Calderon

The New York Knicks are looking for a team to take their veteran point guard Jose Calderon off of their hands. They are hoping that someone will take that contract from them and give them a little relief. Via Yahoo’s Marc Stein:

"“A source said the Knicks are actively trying to unload guard Jose Calderon’s contract. Calderon is owed $7.4 million in 2015-16, and $7.7 million in 2016-17.”"

That will be a big chunk of change that a team will have to take on for a point guard that has been struggling on the court. He is 34 years old and looks to be on the decline. In his first season with the Knicks, he is averaging 9.2 points per game whille shooting 42% from the field.

I don’t know if there is a team that would be willing to take on that salary. I don’t know if there is a team that would be willing to add him onto their roster at that price tag.

The Detroit Pistons and Houston Rockets are a couple of teams that could be looking to add a point guard onto their roster at the trade deadline. Will they be interested?

The Rockets were interested in bringing in Rajon Rondo before the Dallas Mavericks pulled the trigger on a deal. Now they are looking for another available point guard to add onto their roster. They are looking for an upgrade over Patrick Beverley and have recently been dealing with the injury to Dwight Howard.

The Pistons are looking for help at the position after the injury to Brandon Jennings. Jennings will be out for the season, so the team has been on a search to find someone to fill his responsibilities.

Calderon likely wouldn’t be a good fit for either of those teams. He may be stuck on the Knicks roster. Nobody wants to pay a guy that doesn’t produce.

There are other available options at point guard for teams that are searching for help. Deron Williams would be a solid option for some team. The Brooklyn Nets have a few of their players available at the deadline. This season Williams is averaging 14 points per game and 6.2 assists per game.

Another solid trade option for teams is Goran Dragic from the Phoenix Suns. He is averaging 16.5 points per game and 4 assists per game.

As much as the Knicks would like to unload the contract of Calderon, it seems that they are stuck. There are better options for teams to pursue.
