Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Letroy Guion was arrested in Florida on Tuesday night for possession of marijuana.

Letroy Guion wasn’t a very well-known NFL name coming into this season, but the Green Bay Packers gave him a chance and were glad that they did. He was a key piece of their defensive line, and made quite a few plays down the stretch of the season to help the Packers get to the NFC Championship game.

Many fans and analysts expected the Packers to keep him around this offseason, but that might have all changed due to bad decision-making on Guion’s part.

It is certainly a decision that Guion will regret, and the Packers will likely immediately cease the “long-term talks” that they were having with him.

During the 2014 season, Guion ended up recording 32 tackles to go along with 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble. They certainly weren’t huge numbers, but simply having a 6’4″ and 315-pound defensive tackle was big at times for the Packers. He spent the previous five years of his career with the Minnesota Vikings, but never lived up to much there.

At 27 years of age, this would have been an ideal time for him to hammer out a long-term contract. He is still in the prime of his career, and is coming off of the best season of his career. Now that he has gotten into off-the-field issues, there will be quite a bit more hesitancy from teams to give him a lucrative deal.

Needless to say, it will be interesting to see what Ted Thompson and the Packers do about this situation. They aren’t the type of team to put up with drama off-the-field, and it will likely signal the end of Guion’s tenure in Green Bay.

If that does end up being the case, they will have to find another defensive tackle in either free agency or the draft. There are plenty of talented defensive linemen available, so that shouldn’t be much of a concern for the Packers. Green Bay does know about the situation and issued a short release.

All of that being said, this could end up being a tragic decision for Guion’s career. If he does indeed lose his spot with the Packers, it is a mistake that he will think about for the remainder of his career and life.
