The Orlando Magic have fired head coach Jacque Vaughn after a disappointing start to the 2014-15 season and in the middle of a 10-game losing streak.

Jacque Vaughn was fired by the Orlando Magic this afternoon, after getting off to yet another slow start. The Magic are in the middle of a 10-game losing streak, and that forced the Magic’s hand after a two-and-a-half year stint with the team.

Orlando has named James Borrego as their interim head coach, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

It will be very interesting to see what ends up happening throughout the rest of the season. Vaughn wasn’t necessarily a “bad” coach, but he certainly wasn’t a “good” coach either. Orlando was happy to have him for the past two and a half seasons to help grow a very young team, but they need someone who can take them over the hump to the next level.

Borrego probably won’t end up being their coach of the future either, but he’ll be a solid coach to finish out the season with. There are plenty of options that the Magic could look at in the future, and plenty of veteran head coaches that could help them take the next step.

There is no question that the Magic have the necessary talent to take the next step and jump into playoff contention in the next year or two. Victor Oladipo and Nikola Vucevic have been an excellent two-man punch this year, and they have a solid, young supporting cast around them. Rookie point guard Elfrid Payton has shown flashes of brilliance, while Tobias Harris has also been an important piece.

Harris is currently expected to test the free agent waters this coming offseason, but the Magic would likely still bring him back at the right price.

That being said, Orlando will also have some money to spend this coming offseason, should they choose to do so. Aaron Gordon is yet another rookie with plenty of talent to turn into an excellent basketball player for whoever the next full-time head coach is.

After quite a few years of being irrelevant, the Magic are taking the right steps to break out of that mold. They have the talent on their roster, and now they are focusing on bringing in the necessary coaching staff. The future hasn’t looked brighter for Orlando in quite some time.
