Phil Mickelson thinks Tiger Woods’ golf game is going to be just fine, despite Woods’ recent struggles

Well, things haven’t gotten much better for Tiger Woods, who recently shot his worst round (82) as a professional and missed the cut at the Waste Management Phoenix Open last weekend.

This week, Phil Mickelson spoke out about Tiger’s issues, according to a report from USA Today.

“I think that Tiger’s going to have the last laugh,” Mickelson said, via USA Today.

Most of Tiger’s issues have come from his short game, putting and chipping around the green. In Phoenix, Tiger just didn’t look comfortable at all. His drives and approach shots were okay, not great, but they haven’t been great in a while. Tiger’s just been really good at getting out of bad spots his whole career.

Then, when Tiger got around the green, a place where he’s been so deadly in his career, Tiger was all over the place, chunking easy chips, and missing makable putts.

To Mickelson, the short game is the hardest part to get back after taking time away from the game.

“The short game, when you haven’t played, it’s the first thing to feel uncomfortable and the quickest thing to get back,” Mickelson said, via USA Today.

While that makes complete sense, the reality is Tiger hasn’t won a major since 2008, and he hasn’t been the same player since the whole sex addiction/divorce situation. Who knows if Tiger will ever be the player he was. After all of his injury issues, I doubt that will ever be the case.

With 14 Majors, Tiger only needs five more Major wins to pass Jack Nicklaus for most Major wins all-time. While that seems more and more unlikely as Tiger gets older, I think we all have to remember that Tiger is only 39 years old. He could realistically play professional golf for another 15-20 years. If he competes for another 15 years, he could play in 60 Major Tournaments. I think he’s got an okay chance to win five of those.

Quite frankly, I hope he does win at least a few more tournaments and make golf interesting again.

Putting all of Tiger’s personal and private issues aside, as an average golf fan, I would much rather watch Tiger Woods on Sunday at the Master’s than four other dudes I’ve never heard of in my life compete for the trophy. Golf needs some star power, and right now, the only player that can bring the game back is Tiger.
